2 Month Check Up

We saw the pediatrician last week for Claire’s 2 month well check and vaccines. She weighed 11 lbs, 8 oz and was 22 3/4 inches long. That’s a weight gain of 3 1/2 lbs in one month! The expected weight gain for that time frame was about 1 1/2 pounds, so we overshot that just a little :)  Guess we don’t have to worry about whether or not she’s eating enough! Dr. Prakash jokingly said she’d have a third chin by her next visit!

We were dreading the vaccines, and had decided that we weren’t comfortable with her receiving 7 or 8 viral components in one visit. We made up our minds to go with an alternate vaccine protocol (a la Dr. Sears) but our pediatrician uses combo vaccines and doesn’t even have the individual components in the office. We ended up going with the one major combo vaccine (5 viral components unfortunately) and will return for 2 more in a month. As a vet, I’m all too aware of potential issues when multiple vaccines are given at the same time. Yes, I know dogs and humans aren’t exactly the same, but the immunology is! In fact, dogs are often used as models for human diseases due to significant genome similarities.

Claire cried when she got the injection, but quickly forgot about it and was okay. Mom, on the other hand, cried a lot more—I had to hold her and saw the pitiful little face she made! Plus the stress of the whole vaccine decision was getting to me too :(

It’s a really hard job having to make decisions that can have such a large impact on someone that you love more than life itself!
